PhD Student Jiang Lanying wins the 2005 North American Membrane Society Student Award

Ms Jiang Lanying, a PhD student under the supervision of Prof Neal Chung, has received the 2005 North American Membrane Society (NAMS) Student Award for her work on “Fundamental study of mixed matrix hollow fiber membranes”.

This award is presented annually to outstanding young individuals who are just beginning work in the membrane area. In this work, advanced mixed matrix composite membranes were fabricated for gas separation. It was found that the morphology of the organic/inorganic mixed matrix skin layer in the hollow fibers changed with the membrane formation conditions. A novel approach was presented for revitalizing and further improving the performance of these hollow fibers. This was the first study to investigate some fundamental scientific and engineering aspects related to the fabrication of essentially defect-free asymmetric mixed matrix hollow fibers.
